“Since the launch in August we have reached people all over the world, which is awesome since Lyme exists in every single continent other than Antarctica,” said Kennedy of her site, “Living with Lyme.”

“Metrics show the podcasts have doubled in downloads each month and have been listened to in 17 countries,” Kennedy said.

Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, is the most common tickborne infectious disease in the United States.

It is estimated that some 300,000 people in the U.S. are annually diagnosed with it. Symptoms may include a skin rash, which occurs in about 70 percent of cases, fever and fatigue. Laboratory testing may confirm a diagnosis of the disease, with many cases successfully treated with a course of antibiotic therapy.

Lyme disease fatigue can be overwhelming

Living With Lyme Founder Cindy Kennedy, a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, spoke with 22News of Springfield, Massachusetts, recently about Lyme disease fatigue and the importance of being diagnosed and treated quickly after Lyme symptoms appear.

Fatigue is one of the symptoms that Lyme disease inflicts.

“I cannot describe the fatigue,” Kennedy told 22News. “It is nothing like, oh I’m a little tired. It can be debilitating. So I have to know my own limits.”

Kennedy said she could have been cured if she had information about Lyme disease and its symptoms.

Cindy Kennedy, founder of Living With Lyme, was interviewed for a Western Mass News – WGGB/WSHM story about Lyme disease that aired on July 10.

The story focuses on the potential for a seasonal shot that can prevent Lyme disease. Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School are working on the preventive treatment, which if successful could take two or three years to receive the approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
